Chapter 15

Callie

I f Callie had known she was going to be meeting Arden’s parents, she would have never worn a Jurassic Park cosplay. Not only were her shorts way shorter than she usually wore, but her shirt was also more revealing. Granted, Arden’s outfit was way more revealing and her parents didn’t say anything about it. Maybe they were cool and didn’t care. They seemed cool.

In fact, Callie actually liked meeting them very much. They seemed like the type of parents that were quirky but super loving. Their love for Arden was almost palpable, and, yet again, Callie wished she had that growing up. How different could her life have been if she’d had Sophia and Antoine or Lorna and Jim as her parents?

The possibility was too much for Callie to process. Needing a break from the crowd, Callie followed the sidewalk that ran along the halfmoon cove. There was a large pier with several fishing boats moored to it, and the smell of fish assaulted Callie’s senses. She kept walking, hoping to find a less smelly place to sit.

On the opposite side of the cove was a small area that overlooked the pier and the ocean. There were several benches there, and only one was occupied with someone. Callie almost walked past them until she realized who it was.

“Alexis?”

“Hey.” She motioned for Callie to join her. “I had to feed the kiddo.”

It was then Callie noticed Archer in her arms. She sat on the bench beside Alexis, who covered up more.

“It’s fine. You don’t have to cover up.”

“Well, I realized the other day when you walked in on me pumping that maybe I should be a little more modest around people who don’t know me as well as Sophia.”

Callie sat beside Alexis, careful to keep distance between them to give Alexis some space. She looked out over the water at the crowd of people mingling up and down Main Street. The scene was unlike anything Callie had seen before. All the streetlamps and lights from all the shops downtown created a luminous effect on the whole street. It was as if Moonflower Cove truly was transported right out of a picturesque TV show.

Beside her, Alexis cleared her throat.

“So, can I ask you a random question?”

Nodding, Callie braced herself for whatever question was to come. Alexis picked up her phone and unlocked it. She opened her photo app before handing the phone to Callie. It was a side-by-side picture of the twins. They were laying on a blanket with numbers on it with the number four circled. Every month, Blake and Alexis posted updates of the twins’ growth on their private social media pages which Callie found endearing.

“Can you tell that’s the same baby?”

“What?” Callie chuckled as she flipped from one photo of Reese to the next photo of Archer. “They look like twins. Is that what you mean?”

Alexis laughed, shaking her head. “No. Reese was so not in the mood when we took those photos. Blake suggested we just change Archer’s clothes and pretend it was Reese since they’re the same size anyway.
